Overview

Arupadai veedu (Six abodes of Lord Murugan) are the six temples of Hindu God Murugan, son of Lord Shiva situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. Lord Murugan’s six most important shrines in India are the Six Abodes also known as ‘Arupadai Veedu’, literally meaning six warhouses or homeland for Karthikeya and his devotees. All the six temples located in Tamil Nadu are listed and sorted in the sequence:

Itinerary

Day 01 Chennai

First Day of this tour commences from Kapaleeshwarar Temple, a temple of Shiva located in Mylapore, Chennai in the south of India. Shiva is worshiped as Kapaleeshwarar, and his consort Parvati is depicted as Karpagambal.

After this great and gigantic temple, the next stop is at Arupadai Veedu Temple i.e. Six Abodes of Shiva which is followed by a visit to Vadapalani Andavar Temple. Also known as, Vadapalani Murugan Temple, it is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan. This temple has an amazing history of being built initially as a simple thatched shed.

 

Day 02 Chennai – Tiruthani – Kumbakonam (Swamimalai)

After a devoted night of sleep, the second day directly starts from the fifth abode of Lord Murugan i.e. Subramanya Swamy temple. Tiruthani comprises one of the six Padai Veedu shrines of Lord Subramanya. Tiruthani is known for the valor and spirit shown by Subramanya after vanquishing the demon Surapadam. This place is a witness of an auspicious and sacred wedding ritual of Subramanya and Valli.

The next stop is Swaminatha Swamy Temple located in Swamimalai dedicated to lord Murugan, 5 km from Kumbakonam. One of the six abodes of Murugan, this temple got its identity when Murugan, praised enthusiastically the meaning of the Pranava Mantra(Aum Mantra) to his father Shiva at the same place.

 

Day 03 Kumbakonam – Palani – Madurai

After a historic day of traveling, the early mornings start with Palani Murugan Temple also known as Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, the next stop which is one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan. 38 sub-temples are found within this temple premises and it belongs to 9th century. You can enjoy the day tour and have leisure time for your shopping and other activities.

 

Day 04 Madurai

The fourth day starts with zeal as we head on to one of the six abodes of Murugan, Tirupparankunram Murugan Temple, located at Tirupparankunram. According to the legend, this is the temple where Murugan married Devayanai, the daughter of Lord Indra. This temple is also a mark of the holy place of the sun and moon’s compliance. We also cover Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple which is at the north of Madurai, on the top of a hill. One of the six important abodes of Lord Murugan, it is near to the Vishnu Temple of Azhagar Kovil. Pazhamudircholai was not the actual temple for the main deity, Azhagar Kovil was. The deity was later relocated to Pazhamudircholai which has continued to be the temple for the main deity till date. The Ettuthokai, the Silappathikaram and the Pattupattu, are some of the old Tamil literature forms which praise Murugan at Pazhamudircholai.

  

Day 05 Madurai - Thiruchendhur - Madurai

After the eventful days of the planned tour, we reach the penultimate day where we cover Thiruchendur Murugan Temple which is the only one among the six sacred temple complexes to be situated near the sea shore i.e. on the shores of Bay of Bengal. This temple being ISO certified is one of the largest and most visited temple complexes in India. Being the largest, your entire day goes well-utilized studying the minimal architecture of one of six abodes of Lord Murugan.

  

Day 06 Madurai Departure

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to undertake the Arupadai Veedu Murugan Tour is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for temple visits and travel. The summer months (April–June) can be hot and tiring, especially around Palani and Tiruchendur. Monsoon season (July–September) brings occasional heavy rains that may disrupt travel.


For a more spiritual experience, many devotees also plan their trip during Thaipusam (Jan/Feb), Panguni Uthiram (March/April), and Skanda Sashti (Oct/Nov) – the most significant festivals dedicated to Lord Murugan.

  • The vehicle will be arranged as per the planned itinerary. If you’d like to extend your travel or add extra sightseeing, it can be arranged with applicable additional charges.

  • All rates and availability are subject to change at the time of booking. We are not holding any rooms or blocking.

  • Confirmation of Hotels, Rooms, Car hire and Services are subject to availability at the time of booking.

  • Hotels are very strict with the child policy. Please carry the age proof so that it can be produced when asked for.

  • For extra person, mattress will be provided not bed at all places.

  • Rooms offered will have one King or two Queen or Twin Beds and strictly subject to availability at the time of check-in.

  • Room category in all packages is the Base Category.

  • Vehicle will be given Point to Point or at Disposal Basis as per selected itinerary.

  • All sightseeing are subject to weather conditions, political conditions in the destination.

  • Standard Check-in time 12:00hrs – 14:00hrs and Check-out time is 10:00hrs – 12:00hrs (Noon) as per the hotel policy.

  • All guests are requested to carry documents for security purpose & hotel policy. Documents such as (Original photo ID proof with photo copy (Identity card – Voter ID card / Pass-port / Driving License) has in some places PAN Card and Aadhar Card is not acceptable.

  • Meals provided at the hotel (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) are based on a set menu. Anything other than the set menu will be charged extra. In room dining will be at an additional cost and has a different menu altogether. For any food related service issue we will not be responsible.

  • Please note that the given rates are based on securing accommodation at the specified hotels at different destinations. In case of any unavailability issues the hotels of equivalent category will be used. Further add on costs and cost reduction will be advised accordingly. Please note, the names of hotels mentioned only indicate that our rates are based on these hotels and it’s not to be assumed that accommodation is already confirmed at these hotels. In case the same hotels are not available, we will book alternate accommodation at a similar or next best available hotel and shall pass on the difference of rates (supplement/ reduction whatever applicable) to you.

  • Distance and transfer time provided on the itinerary are for the reference only. We will not be responsible for any delay due to high traffic, processions, bad weather, interior resort location, etc.

  • It is advise to guests don’t leave any valuables in the vehicles, guests are responsible for their own belongings. Guests must ensure to collect their belongings while leaving the vehicle.

  • Hotels in the Hill Stations / Plantation destinations are mostly with Non A/C Rooms– kindly get it clarified if not specified to avoid any confusion.

  • Usage of the transportation services are limited from 08.00hrs to 20.00hrs. However the service between 06.00hrs to 08.00hrs & 20.00hrs to 22.00hrs can be extended with an additional driver’s Bata (each time) which has to be settled directly with the driver on a daily basis. Any usage between 22.00hrs & 06.00hrs has to be informed in advance – at the time of booking – as we can arrange it with additional charges to avoid any last minute disappointments / service denial.

  • Air conditioner in the vehicle would be functional only during the vehicle is on the move (not when the vehicle parked). And Air conditioner wouldn’t be functional during the drive through hill stations and Ghat Roads

  • Only those sightseeing points would be covered which is accessible by the type of vehicle booked.

  • Each sightseeing points / Temple visits (only which included in the itinerary) can be covered only once during the trip. If the guest want to do it multiple times, it is possible (if time permits) with additional payment (to be settled directly with the driver before proceeding for it) and the distance covered in such trips wouldn’t be considered in the kilometre allowance worked out in the package.

  • Sightseeing of additional destinations – other than the destinations participating in the itinerary – cannot be covered.
